Good morning from San Pedro!
We walked down to Pelican Reef Villas again. It is close and delicious with spectacular views. They have other items on their breakfast menu, like eggs and oatmeal and fruit and their breakfast entrees are included if you stay with them. (But the banana pancakes are great and I crave them when I get home.)
Then we hurried back because we had the same boat and guide pick us up again from Athens Gate. We were going to troll our way over to Caye Caulker. It is a smaller island about 4 miles long about 11 miles south of Ambergris Caye. We tried trolling for awhile and got a few hits but couldn’t get anything to bite. (I didn’t really mind because I love cruising around in a boat that is so close to the water and watching the amazing colors and feeling the breeze – breathtaking!) Our guide stopped near the mangroves and caught some bait fish and we went out to a small man-made reef. The guide and Chip pointed out 2 large cobia that were swimming the reef. We tried to catch them and they chased the bait a few times but we couldn’t get them to bite either. The whole fishing experience here is a amazing. We did catch a live well full of black snapper, red snapper, and yellow snapper and it was really fun!
Then we headed across to Caye Caulker. It was starting to get windy and a little overcast. We went to eat at lunch at a place called The Lazy Lizard at the split. We had shrimp quesadillas and they were excellent. I wasn’t really expecting great food because The Lazy Lizard was rocking. It is an outdoor bar with lots of different kinds of seating, including tables in the water. They also had a DJ and loud music and games and a diving platform and a place to swim. They had quite a few choices on their menu and the food was good.
Caye Caulker is a great place to come over a spend an afternoon or a day. There are some great little places to eat and shop or take an excursions or just find a beach to relax on.
On our way back the wind had kicked up and it was quite wavy. We were drenched by the time we got back to our pier. You can never really tell about the weather here. It can start sunny and storms can pop up but they usually go out as fast as they come in. Then sometimes it starts overcast and rainy and clears up before lunch. The temperatures were in the mid 70’s at night to low eighties during the day the whole time we were her.
Tip: Bring light rain gear. You will want to be able to go out and explore even on rainy days. It is nice to have it.
For dinner we went to El Divino’s Steakhouse which is the restaurant at Banana Beach Resort. The waiter was very knowledgeable and friendly. They are known for their ceviche, which is a dish typically with fresh raw fish, octopus or shrimp. The lemon or lime juice “cooks” the seafood and then they add onions and peppers and you eat it with tortilla chips. I am not much on raw seafood, but we tried the shrimp ceviche (they actually cook the shrimp first for this dish) and it was very good.
Chip had a shrimp fettuccine pasta dish for his entree and I had the filet mignon. Both were excellent and extremely generous portions. I had two good sized filets. The potato dishes on the island are excellent. I had garlic mashed potatoes with this entree and they were great.
Another day in paradise…….
